Schloss, 83, said it was increasingly important that ageing Holocaust survivors pass on their stories while they still can so younger generations understand the suffering Jewish people faced and the consequences of prejudice.

People felt guilty. You had to stay quiet and suppress your fears which came out in nightmares.

You just had to try to live with it. Schloss was arrested in Amsterdam in May, , on her 15th birthday during the German occupation of the Netherlands and, with her mother, was forced to listen to her brother and father being tortured in the next room while in detention.

The family was briefly reunited on a train to a Dutch holding camp but was then moved to Auschwitz where women and men were separated. Her survival depended on endless strokes of luck, her own determination and the love and protection of her mother Fritzi, who was deported with her.

When Auschwitz was liberated, Eva and Fritzi began the long journey home. They searched desperately for Eva''s father and brother, from whom they had been separated.
